Like Tarik, I have always greatly respected Finkelstein, not only because he 1st opened my eyes about the Holocaust a bit (I read his book “The Holocaust Industry”), but also because he has always been very critical of “israel”, or so it seems.
He may be critical about “israel”, but when the going gets tough, however, he becomes very protective of the country. If there are issues that I have been able to dig up, I am convinced that he knows them too, and probably in more detail than me.
Therefore, when he makes statements like “there’s no evidence that the U.S. went to war against Iraq at Israel’s behest”, or that “israel” was not behind the Kennedy assassination, or that claims that ‘Israel manipulated Trump into this war. He was tricked by the Israelis. He was seduced’ are ridiculous, to me this is a red flag of disingenuousness.
The documentary and circumstantial evidence for all 3 events is overwhelming, and denying it goes against scholarly rectitude. In a similar vein, Finkelstein insists that 6 million Jews were gassed during WW2, even though the facts tell a different story. 1 example: most of the people who perished in Auschwitz were Jews, but when in 1991 the original memorial plaque outside the camp stating 4 million Jews were killed there by one that said 1½ million were killed, the 6 million number was never changed.
Another aspect that he never addresses, apparently because he deems it is beyond debate, is that those 6 million were gassed. According to the experts there is no forensic evidence that homicidal gas chambers existed. There is much more in the narrative that does not stack.
In conclusion, it may well be that Finkelstein feels threatened by any narrative that shifts blame away from the U.S. and onto the “israelis”, but it goes deeper. Despite his excoriation of the country, Finkelstein supports its existence.
